Steve Haggard
Commercial Banking Executive
Steve Haggard joined Alerus in 2022 through its merger with Metro Phoenix Bank. He oversees teams in Phoenix and Scottsdale and leads strategic planning and market-related business development activities, in addition to serving clients. He has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry and has spent his entire career in the commercial banking industry, specifically within executive management at Phoenix area commercial banks. His areas of focus have provided him extensive business banking experience, leadership skills, and market expertise.
Before joining Alerus, Steve was a founder of Metro Phoenix Bank and served as president, CEO, and board member for nearly 15 years, leading the company from inception to become the largest full-service community bank headquartered in Phoenix. Prior to launching Metro Phoenix Bank, Steve served in various executive management roles and led initiatives for multiple organizations, including participating at the ground level for a de novo institution’s launch, improving operations as part of a turn-around project, and serving as bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Iowa, with a major in finance and a minor in economics.
Steve is a long-term member with the Arizona Bankers Association and serves on its Fintech Council. He is a member of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) and a former director of the Chandler Youth Football Organization, where he served on the board for nearly 10 years. Steve and his family have been members of Compass Christian Church (formerly Chandler Christian Church) for 20 years. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his large family, traveling, playing the guitar, and hot yoga. His entire family are die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fans and enjoy all University of Iowa sports.
Steve and his wife Tanya have five children and live in Chandler, Arizona.
